Commentary: The Possibilities of Video Mapping

Summary

In today's story about an upcoming symposium at Portland State University, I talked about a technology called "video mapping," which allows artists to make a detailed computer model of a surface and then project a video onto all of its 3D features. Local company Spitball Media has used this technology in interior spaces for parties and the like, but they, and others, would like to see bigger outdoor applications of this technology in Portland, perhaps beginning with some sort of light festival.

Overseas, this technology is in more frequent use. For the 600- year anniversary of the Astronomical Clock in Prague, for example, a Czech company created this amazing video showcasing the history of that city and the clock itself. In this video, you can see why architects are taking an interest in this technology as a new way to look at the urban landscape or to re-imagine architectural features.
