Commentary: What Happened to High-School Shop Classes?

Summary


Last month, while making my way through Lincoln High School at back-to-school night, I bumped into Jim Parr (LHS '73). We were next to a room marked "Drafting," but there wasn't a drafting board (or a CAD computer) to be seen. Jim was having a bit of trouble navigating the school because the wood shop, metal shop, electrical shop and the drafting room that he had known all were gone.

Later that week, at a monthly meeting for parents, a discussion arose about how to position the school for the future. Much was made of art and academic programs, but shop classes weren't even on anyone's radar screen.
