Mathew Stubbs is a natural on a machine. The 18-year-old student from the Portland metro area is currently enrolled in the Northwest College of Construction's heavy equipment program and recently received a $1,500 scholarship from the National Utility Contractors Association to help pay for his education there.

But before Stubbs got the scholarship, his mother, Cindy, was concerned that he would not be able to pay for his education.
