Conversation with Brandon Smith, Acting Ceo of Cascadia Chapter of U.S. Green Building Council

Raised in Birmingham, Ala., and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Smith came out west equipped with a master's degree in international business and a penchant for sustainable development a little more than two years ago. As soon as he arrived, he says, he began cold calling, searching the Web, finding people who were doing green building.

That's when the former Cascadia Region CEO, Glen Gilbert, offered him the position of deputy director.

When I got here I wasn't expecting to get a job in green building or sustainable development right away, Smith remembers, I thought, 'It's a long shot but I'll go for it. I just knew it was what I wanted to do eventually. I figured I would end up working for Intel or Nike in international marketing and then one day work my way into green building. It just so happened that I was in the right place at the right time...
