With the Oregon Legislature considering a statewide alternative fuels mandate, Los Angeles-based author Josh Tickell visited Portland last week, part of his agenda of spreading biofuels awareness across the country.

Tickell, best known for his book "From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank," a primer on biodiesel production and use, spoke to a packed room of the Young Professionals of Portland about his latest book, "Biodiesel America: How to Achieve Energy Security, Free America from Middle-East Oil Dependence and Make Money Growing Fuel."

Interview with Josh Tickell: Biodiesel America

Tickell hopes to play host to a "huge biodiesel event" in Portland later this year to celebrate the release of his new 90- minute biofuels documentary and draw national attention to the nation's dependence on fossil fuels and the promise of biofuels.

Oregon has a unique role in bringing biofuels to the fore of national politics, he said.

"Portland is a leader and that message could then go across the country," Tickell said. "It's so important that the people are receptive of people like Al Gore who come with a problem. But now we have a solution and we need that same community's support around the solution."
