Though the friendly face in the reception area at Opsis Architecture gets in the first greeting, Leo the golden retriever isn't far behind.

Last winter, Opsis moved into Northwest Portland's 1910 Lovejoy Building - for which it took a 2005 AIA Portland Sustainable Merit award - after a yearlong renovation process that targeted maximum sustainability. The firm's second-floor office is an airy, light- filled and dog-friendly space, with a can't-help-but-overhear open setup that was a big part of the plan. Though the renovation is technically complete, it's easy to fiddle with a project that you see every day, says Opsis partner - and Leo owner - James Meyer.

We'll never be done here, says Meyer, who founded the firm with Alec Holser and Jim Kalvelage. We're still working on stuff.

The six-year-old firm's work is diverse, from community planning for the in-progress 32-acre Pringle Creek sustainable community in Salem to small residential projects to the Niemeyer Arts Center at Clackamas Community College, which also took a 2005 award from the American Institute of Architects Portland chapter.

It's a variety that we're comfortable with, Meyer says. It fits, and we're OK with it.
