A Washington university's push to attain a LEED rating, fueled by a cutting-edge underground heat pump, proved successful last week when its Morken Center for Learning and Technology earned gold certification through the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.

The $21 million center, designed by Portland-based Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership, opened in February. Construction of the 53,137- square-foot building at Pacific Lutheran University, by Seattle firm Sellen Construction, took 13 months.
