Oregon Tradeswomen Fair Urges Women to Enter Construction Workforce

Summary


With roughly one-third of today's construction workers set to retire within the next decade, it's expected more women will enter the largely male-dominated field. As it stands, women make up only 3 percent of today's construction workforce, a statistic that Oregon Tradeswomen Inc. hopes to change by sponsoring the 13th annual Women in Trades Career Fair, April 28 through 30 in Tualatin.

The industry is predicting a huge retirement in the next five to 10 years, said Connie Ashbrook, Oregon Tradeswomen's executive director. Some trades, like utilities, may see half their workers retire. Those trades are opening their doors for the next generation of workers, so now is the perfect time for women to enter the trades.
