Some libraries offer a lot more than just books. The city of Portland is planning to open one in which architects from small and independent firms can check out fabric that turns to concrete or wood flooring with resistance to fungus.

The Portland Development Commission on Monday night announced a partnership with global materials library Material ConneXion to create the city's first materials resource library, where architects, designers and others can go to view and handle building materials.
