Ratepayers in the Northwest Gave Green Power a Green Light in '09

Summary


Northwest residents were pinching pennies last year, but they continued to be willing to pay extra to their utility companies for green power in 2009, according to a study by the Renewable Northwest Project.

Oregon, Washington, Montana and Idaho have 40 voluntary green power purchasing programs, which allow customers to pay a little extra on their utility bill to support increased development of renewable energy sources or to have all of their power come directly from renewable sources. Public participation in these programs increased 5.8 percent in 2009 despite poor economic conditions, according to Rachel Shimshak, director of the Renewable Northwest Project.
