With its touch-activated plasma wall, video conferencing and new laptop computers, the new Umpqua Bank, in the John Ross condo tower on the South Waterfront, has the feel of a high-tech space station.

Still, Umpqua's "Innovation Station," designed by Portland architectural firms TVA and GBD, has no "2001: A Space Odyssey" sterility. By incorporating elements like a community wall and a large farm-style gathering table, the South Waterfront branch is as inviting as it is technologically advanced, according to Lani Hayward, a marketing director with Umpqua.
