Willamette River Bridge Committee chooses cable-stayed bridge

Summary

The newest bridge to span the Willamette River in over 35 years will be designed as a refined cable-stay, according to a decision made by the Willamette River Bridge Advisory Committee on Monday. Scheduled to be constructed in 2010 as part of the Portland- Milwaukie light-rail project, the bridge will carry MAX trains, bus lines, pedestrians and cyclists, as well as a future streetcar line.

The decision, according to TriMet Communications Director Mary Fetsch, came down to cost. The cable-stayed design will cost $110 million to construct; the hybrid would cost $139 million.
